Bluefin Tuna Sells for Unprecedented Sum of 3.2 million dollars at Tokyo Auction
A massive bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; ÂŁ2.4m) during the market's first auction of the new year.
The winning offer for the 535-pound fish came from the company of a well-known sushi restaurant group, which manages outlets across the country and abroad.
"The first tuna heralds a prosperous start," remarked the business owner, a notable bidder at the annual new year's auction.
Dubbed the King of Tuna, this industry figure is renowned for placing substantial bids for premium bluefin tuna at these symbolic new year auctions.
Bidding Shock and Historic Precedent
Following the auction, the winner informed reporters that he was "surprised at the amount," adding, "I believed we would be able to acquire it a little for less, but the price escalated rapidly."
This most recent purchase surpasses his own historic purchases:
- He bid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
- He bid 155 million yen in 2013.
- In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).
Despite once commenting that he thought he "did too much," he has now gone on to shatter his personal record another time.
A Tradition of Exorbitant Bids
The opening auction at the Tokyo fish market is traditionally known for exorbitant prices. The previous year, the first tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by another culinary group, which announced the fish would be featured at its eateries nationwide.
The high-energy atmosphere at the fish market during these early morning auctions has evolved into a popular spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was no exception.

The record-priced tuna was promptly prepared for patrons at the entrepreneur's sushi restaurants immediately after the auction ended.
