Google Plans Investment of $15bn to Build Artificial Intelligence Data Center in India
The parent firm of Google Alphabet Inc. will invest $15bn for constructing an AI data hub in the state of Andhra Pradesh in southern India.
The infrastructure, that is planned in the harbor town of Visakhapatnam city, is set to become a segment of Google's global network of AI centres distributed over 12 countries.
"This represents the biggest AI facility that we are committing funds to worldwide, excluding the United States," Thomas Kurien announced at an gathering in capital Delhi recently, noting that the funding is to be distributed across the coming five years.
This declaration arrives during a period President Trump of the United States has been encouraging US firms to give priority to investments within the country.
The Expanding Position of India in AI Infrastructure
The nation has become a key destination for AI data centers. The country's low data costs and rapidly growing internet user base have made it a hub for expansion of cloud and artificial intelligence for technology leaders.
"The infrastructure will introduce our industry-leading technology to companies and individuals in the country, accelerating artificial intelligence advancement and driving growth throughout the nation," said Alphabet's chief executive Sundar Pichai.
Initiative Particulars
A definitive arrangement to conclude the project is scheduled for signing this Tuesday, the Andhra Pradesh government announced.
"This represents a significant advancement for our state's digital future, progress, and global standing," remarked the technology official Nara Lokesh.
The project will merge computing and artificial intelligence facilities with renewable energy systems and an enhanced optical fiber network.
The State's Data Hub Strategy
This initiative is part of the Andhra Pradesh government's strategy to create six gigawatts of data center capability by 2029.
Data centres are physical facilities that contain the computer and network hardware that entities use to gather, analyze, save, and share information.
These include servers, memory systems and network equipment like firewalls and routers, in addition to the necessary power and cooling systems to operate them.
Investment Incentives
Within the state, the local administration has been offering discounted land and electricity to entice international investors.
Sector Expansion
India's data centre industry has expanded quickly over the past five years, surpassing the 1GW capability milestone in 2024 and approximately tripling its 2019 level.
